Gearing up to remodel? Don't start before reading our list of common kitchen mistakes.

•Your kitchen is an island. Be sure to consider the way your kitchen's look will gel with the rest of your home. An ultra-modern kitchen in a 19th-century farmhouse will stick out like a sore thumb. Keep architectural integrity in mind.

•You're a skin-deep thinker. Remember that selecting beautiful cabinets is only half the battle—and, in a lot of way, the less important half. Make sure you have enough storage for all those plates and pots—and the accessories like tray dividers and pull-out shelves that will make them a snap to find.

•You playing head honcho. A kitchen remodel is a massive undertaking. Unless your daytime job is as a, say, general contractor, you may want to leave this one up to the pros. Assistance from kitchen designers, contractors and architects is invaluable, but be sure to partner with licensed and insured professionals you get along well with.

•You forget that tomorrow is another day. Sure, lowered countertop seating may be the perfect play space for your kids...but in 10 years that petite spot will be worthless. •You don't budge an inch. Sure, remodeling is about replacing that countertop and sink—but it's also the best (and only time) when you can truly play with the room's layout. If you're tired of always walking across your kitchen to get to the refrigerator then move it!

•You've watched too much Extreme Home Makeover. Going at your old kitchen with a sledgehammer may sound like fun, but your space may not need to be entirely gutted. Do a thorough inventory to decide if anything—from your appliances to your cabinets frames—can be saved...saving you money in turn.

•Keep those Martha Stewart dreams realistic. If you've never baked a soufflé, made a plum-stuffed pork tenderloin or tackled Spanish paella, don't expect that an $8,000 range is just the thing you need to go from microwave queen to gourmand. Be realistic about your needs—professional appliances may pack more power than you need.

Before we head into the long holiday weekend, Chris is wrapping up making a custom table and seating area for a client. It is constructed of Solid Maple and finished in an American Walnut Stain. The banquette seating area was constructed by the home builder and we wrapped it with bead board paneling. Rene' Grissom from http://www.gotwindowsneedblinds.com/ will also be adding new custom blinds and custom seat cushions. America's Marble and Granite will be adding a custom granite top approximately 3 inches thick. It should be quite nice when complete. Today, Chris and I visited one of our recently finished kitchens. I was able to take a few pictures of the lovely distressed green island. I love the Rainforest Green countertops with chistled edge, the chunky 6 inch legs and inverted base skirt.

Autumn, the owner's Golden Retriever appears to like the island too.

GENERAL CARE & CLEANING:

Daily cleaning may be done with any non-abrasive cleaner (i.e. BLANCOCLEAN Composite Sink Cleaner). After every use, rinse and wipe the sink dry with a clean, soft cloth to eliminate any water spots or soap film build-ups.

REMOVING STAINS AND MINOR SCUFF MARKS:

Normal Stains ~ For stains, please use BLANCOCLEAN, along with a soft scouring pad.
Stubborn Stains ~ A solution of 50% bleach, 50% water should only be used for tough, stubborn stains. Let the solution sit in the bottom of the sink for one hour; then scrub. Rinse well. Also, the use of Bar Keepers Friend (directions included on bottle) will help remove stubborn stains. Finally, clean with BLANCOCLEAN to put a protective coating back on the sink's surface.

LUSTER:

BLANCOCLEAN can be used to help bring back the luster. Follow the directions on the bottle.

MISCELLANEOUS:

To remove Calcium Deposits (a white ring around the bottom of your sink): use LIME AWAY
To remove Adhesive Labels: use Acetone (nail polish remover)

Tile Countertops are Classic and Strong

Since the days of ancient Rome, not many materials can beat the classic good looks and durability of ceramic tile countertops. Ceramic tile has an unstuffy charm, is easy to care for, and works well on kitchen countertops.

Ceramic tile countertops are durable.

Choose acid-resistant porcelain or glazed ceramic tile with a textured or matte finish, and buy grout in a color to blend with the tile. Before purchasing tiles, be sure to check the manufacturer’s recommendations for countertop use. Quarry tile may be more absorbent than porcelain or ceramic tile, making it subject to grease stains. Tiles are fireproof, durable, moisture resistant stain resistant and will not blister, burn, stain or discolor. Tile has excellent abrasion resistance; grout is only moderately resistant, unless sealed.

Tile can withstand the heat of a stove or a pan of hot water, but not the thermal shock of a very hot pan of fat. Water rolls off tile, but can loosen grout, and as the grout wears, tiles will lift. Surfaces must be flat or tiles will crack. Buy extras so replacements are from the same dye lot.

Tiling a countertop with wider grout joints makes installation and cleaning easier. New acrylic latex additives have improved grout, and are more resistant to cracking, loosening and staining. Use a waterproofing grout sealant every six months, and use a toothbrush to remove the stains that form in crevices. Seal quarry tile with a penetrating oil after it has been laid to build up its immunity to stains.

Special nosing tiles can be fitted along the front of a countertop, while special trim tiles used at the back edge will meet the wall neatly. Accent, trim, hand painted and decorative tiles make design choices limitless. Tiles and mosaics can be bedded into concrete, or stuck directly to a baseboard and grouted in. Use an insert-type sink with a good sealed rim clamped over the tiles, or overlap the sink's edges with curved tiles to prevent seepage.

The four main categories of tile are glazed wall tile, quarry tile, paver tile, and ceramic mosaics. Most tile can be used for countertops, although quarry tile, which can be sealed, is not recommended because of its porousness; it will absorb food stains. Non-vitreous or semi-vitreous tile can be sealed to protect against stains and water absorption; special sealers are available in tile supply stores. Generally, glazed tile is better than unglazed tile for a countertop.

•Glazed Wall Tile. This is a non-vitreous tile with a glaze. Though inappropriate for floors, it is highly suitable for countertops. It is usually about 1/2 to 1/16 inch thick and comes in 41/4-by-41/4-inch and 6-by-6-inch squares.

A sub-category of glazed wall tile is decorative thin wall tile, which has hand painted or silk-screened designs fired into the glaze. It should be used for decorative purposes only - for example, backsplashes - because it lacks the structural strength of conventional glazed wall tile.

•Ceramic Mosaics. These are smaller tiles, often 2-by-2-inch squares. They are available glazed or unglazed, but the glazed versions are better for countertops. They come in square, hexagonal, and rectangular shapes, and often come mounted on large sheets.

•Paver Tile. This looks like ceramic mosaics, only the face area is larger than 6 square inches. Sizes range up to 12-inch squares or 4-by-6-inch or 4-by-8-inch rectangles, in 3/8- to 5/8-inch thicknesses. Usually used for floors, paver tile can be used for countertops if it is glazed. Two drawbacks are that fewer trim pieces are available for this type of tile, and that light-colored porcelain pavers tend to stain.

•Quarry Tile. This is a semi-vitreous or vitreous clay tile, usually left unglazed. It comes in squares of more than 6 inches and is usually not recommended for tile countertops.

Trends in Bathroom Lighting

The current trend in bathroom lighting is toward larger, sunnier baths, and today's top bathroom designers are placing more emphasis on artificial lighting as well. A single, small lighting fixture protruding from the middle of the ceiling doesn’t suffice by today’s standards. Alternative sources of general lighting include recessed ceiling fixtures or indirect lighting that bounces off the ceiling or walls. In addition to good general lighting, adequate task lights are a must.

How the bathroom lighting is selected and placed depends on the size and layout of your bathroom. It also depends on the color scheme—bright colors reflect and enhance lighting effects; dark hues absorb and subdue them.

Lighting a Mirror

Small or large, a bathroom typically functions as a grooming center. For this reason, the area in front of the mirror should be evenly illuminated and free of shadows.

Experts' Insight for Bathroom Lighting

When planning a lighting design for your bathroom, follow these guidelines to ensure adequate general lighting. Light sources should be placed so that light emanates from above, below, and both sides of the mirror. This technique, called cross-lighting, effectively eliminates shadows. If you have light coming only from above, it hits your eyebrows, causing shadows beneath your eyes—not an encouraging sight first thing every morning.
The first consideration should be a fixture that casts light just over the front edge of the sink and countertop. If you choose a light-colored countertop, more light will reflect up onto your face. Then add more lights centered on each side of the mirror.

If fluorescent fixtures are selected to illuminate a mirror, tubes designed for vanity illumination or tubes that produce daylight-spectrum light is ideal. The light from standard fluorescent tubes can be cold and harsh—acceptable for office or shop lighting but not for makeup application. Use one 24-inch, 20-watt tube on each side of the mirror. Two 24-inch, 20-watt tubes mounted above the mirror or a 32-watt circle light on the ceiling will offer adequate lighting to this space.

If fixtures are selected that require incandescent light bulbs, one option is to mount one wall fixture or pendant lamp on each side of the mirror. These side lights each should contain two 60-watt or 75-watt bulbs. If the ceiling fixture is round, it should be at least 12 inches in diameter and contain a bulb or bulbs rated at a total of 100 to 120 watts.

Larger mirrors that are 36 inches or more in width may require a different approach. If standard guidelines are followed, the center of the mirror may appear a bit dark. To avoid this, more powerful overhead light fixtures should be selected, and full coverage over the width of the mirror should be ensured. One effective option is a double row of recessed ceiling fixtures over the vanity.

Small powder rooms typically require one light above the mirror, a fixture on each side of the mirror, and one ceiling light directed toward the front edge of the vanity countertop.

Bath and Shower Lights

In an enclosed shower or tub area, most codes call for enclosed, vapor-proof lights. Use caution when positioning them, however; you don't want to look right into the light when you're lying in the tub. An infrared heat lamp mounted just outside the tub or shower will help avoid chilly exits. All switches should be located at least 6 feet from the tub and shower.

Stall Lights

In toilet compartments, a centered ceiling fixture using a 60 to 75 watt incandescent bulb or a 30 to 40 watt fluorescent tube should be installed.

The Right Light

Most experts recommend using incandescent bulbs in the bathroom, because the light that’s produced has natural, complexion-flattering properties. But incandescent bulbs also produce a good deal of heat that's often unwanted. Compact fluorescent fixtures are a good alternative. They demand far less electricity per lumen (a measurement of light intensity), and the tubes render a warm, pleasing spectrum of colors.

Consider having a dimmer switch installed for your bathroom's overall lighting. Fluorescent lighting doesn’t typically function on a dimmer switch. This will allow you to adjust the light to suit your needs and moods. Dimmers also make night-time visits to the bathroom more bearable, since the light can be turned down below the blinding level. Be sure to install a switch by each doorway so no one will have to cross the bathroom in the dark.

Consider Soapstone

Soapstone is a unique naturally quarried stone that is non-porous. It is becoming the gourmet’s choice for their designer/working kitchen. Famous Celebrities such as Paula Dean and Martha Stewart have soapstone countertops or cookware for their show sets or personal use. The natural soft silky feel of soapstone demands that it be touched. It naturally has a matte or honed finish so you never have to worry about finger prints or drip marks showing as you would with a high polished finish as seen on granite or marble. Soapstone cannot be “sealed” or “treated” because it is a non-porous stone. You can use any kind of cleaner or bleach on its surface and never have to fear of removing the chemical sealer like you would with granite, marble or limestone. Since you are able to use such strong cleaners it makes Soapstone a natural ‘anti-bacterial’ surface. Unlike other forms of manmade countertops, the stone will never fade with direct sunlight, nor will harsh chemicals such as Liquid Plumber or Drano “eat” the surface away. Soapstone is an amazing conductor of hot and colds. You can put hot pots and frozen objects directly onto the stone without fear of damaging it. We have found in our own personal kitchen that the stone will pull hot and cold from whatever object you place on it. It makes cooling an over hot cup of coffee and thawing frozen foods less time constraining. We believe that you will fall in love with the stone as much and if not more then we have.

SOAPSTONE FAQs

1. Does soapstone need to be sealed?

Stone sealers are meant to seal porous stones. Since soapstone is non-porous, it does not need to be sealed.

2. Why do you recommend oiling soapstone?

We recommend oiling soapstone to help the stone darken evenly, instead of in spots. The oil is not a protectant nor does the stone need to be protected.

3. What happens if you do not oil the soapstone?

The stone will naturally darken unevenly, appearing splotchy. It will appear more noticeably around the sink and countertop areas (those used more frequently). Leaving soapstone untreated, it will develop a rustic look which many clients prefer. The stone can always be oiled later on if the untreated results are not desirable.
4. What can I do to prevent the stone from darkening?

Darkening is a natural characteristic of soapstone and cannot be prevented.

5. Will my soapstone counters get scratched?

Yes they will, however most scratches can be hidden by applying mineral oil. Deep scratches, that are less likely to occur, can be sanded off with little effort and time.

6. Are some soapstones harder than others?

Yes, however, the average person cannot tell the difference. The more talc content in the soapstone, the softer it is. Since most of the soapstone sold in the US comes from the same area in Brazil, the variation of the soapstones you can find is very minimal. The way to make soapstone less prone to scratching is by leaving its surface at a coarser/less smooth finish. After testing our soapstone numerous times, we have decided to hone the soapstone up to 120 or 220 grit. Some producers prefer 80 grit, which we can also offer, but most people think it's too rough and difficult to oil.
